Sulcata Tortoise

More commonly known as the African Spurred Tortoise (Geochelone Sulcata) is one of the largest tortoise species in the world. They can reach the size of 18 to 30 inches and weigh between 80-150 pounds. Their life expectancy is as long as 70 years or more. They can be distinguished by their brown-yellow shell along with the spurs on their legs. They are native to semiarid regions of Africa but they can adapt to different living conditions which one the reasons why they’ve become popular pets!

Fun Fact: Tortoise like to dig in order to get to dirt that has more moisture in it. This helps them to cool off during the hot days

Housing

These tortoises need a large space to live in due to their large size and the ability to be able to wander around. A fence around the space is good to keep them and other animals safe. A doghouse shelter or small shed would be a good idea to keep them protected from the elements and a muddy pool for them to cool off in.

It's not ideal to bring them indoors if they are full grown adult, but having a space with warmth is good during the colder climates.

Behavior and Temperament

Like many other tortoises, the Sulcata Tortoise are quiet, big and slow. They are also very curious creatures but at times can be too curious and get stuck in too small spaces. As well as tip over and can't get back up again. Overall they are very pleasant and easy going pets, rarely aggressive towards others .

Best Types of Food and Water

The African Spurred Tortoise is a herbivorous animal, meaning their diet consists high-fiber, low protein. To achieve this giving them grasses, hays, edible weeds and flowers for example dandelions, clover, endive and cactus pads will keep them healthy. Small amounts of leafy green veggies are also a good option for them.

Naturally your tortoise will munch on the grasses and weeds in its habit throughout the day. A good food option is to give them salads of other greens every couple of days. Before giving anything to your pet, check with your veterinarian to make sure you are giving them the proper variety and quantity. All of this depends on the size, age and health of the tortoise.

Side Note: They get their hydration mostly from their food but having a shallow water dish in the tortoise's enclosure can help provide more hydration.

Common Health Concerns

A health issue that this tortoise can get and affect other reptiles is respiratory infections. They can get them more frequently if they are kept in an environment that is too humid. Another issue is shell rot, caused by a fungal infection that can cause a flaky, dry shell.

Tortoise have many other health concerns that can seriously affect them if they aren’t treated by the right professionals and in a timely manner. It is a safer bet to see a veteran than to treat any issue with home remedies.
